Making your own skill
How to ask Aside to turn a task you repeat into a skill, then refine it and share it with others.
Updated
1. Pick a task
Good candidates for a skill:
- Tasks where you repeat the same instructions again and again
- Tasks with a fixed output format (a table, a list, a summary of a set length)
- Tasks where you can check the result yourself
2. Ask Aside to create it
Adapt the text below to your task and paste it into an Aside chat.
Turn the task I'm about to describe into an Aside skill for me.
- Folder name: price-compare
- What it does: check the prices and shipping costs on the product pages I give you and summarize them in a table
- When to use it: when I say "compare prices"
- Rules: do not sign in or make payments; mark any value you couldn't confirm as "needs checking"
Put name and description at the top of SKILL.md.
- Use lowercase letters, numbers, and hyphens for the folder name.
- Always list what Aside should not do under rules.
3. Review the generated SKILL.md
Ask Aside to show you the contents of the new skill's SKILL.md, and check that:
nameanddescriptionare at the top- The description says both what the skill does and when to use it
- The steps, and what not to do, are clear
For details on the format, see Understanding SKILL.md.
4. Try it and adjust
Make a few requests that should trigger the skill. If the results aren't what you expected, ask for a fix, for example: "Add a rule about X to this skill's SKILL.md."
5. Share it
If your skill works well, share it on Upload a skill. Sign in with your Google account and upload SKILL.md. It's published right away, and anyone can download and install it.
Before you upload:
- Remove personal info and secrets: Make sure
SKILL.mddoesn't contain anything others shouldn't see, such as your email, account names, API keys, or internal company URLs. - Describe it honestly: In the description, say what the skill does, which sites it visits, and any limitations or caveats.
- Add examples: Include one to three requests you've actually used so others can try it right away.
- Rights: Only upload a skill someone else made if you have their permission or its license allows it.
After uploading, you can edit it, make it private, or delete it from My skills. Skills that the site operator has installed and tested are marked "Verified".
